Warren Gatland said he wants to remain Wales coach despite a disastrous year in which his side have lost all 11 Tests they have played, but admitted his future was uncertain in the wake of Saturday’s 45-12 loss to South Africa in Cardiff.

Wales are the second tier one nation, after Italy four years ago, to lose all their Tests in a single calendar year in the professional era, and have now extended their record winless run to 12 games.

However, Gatland said he would not resign and believes there is hope heading into the 2025 Six Nations, which starts in late January.

“We’ll just wait and see what happens in the next couple of days,” he said.

“The last couple of weeks have been challenging and you’re only human. The negativity affects you.

“We’ve got a good group of men working hard, it feels like we’re only going to get better. I feel like I’m in a no-win situation when I answer these questions. I do definitely want to be here and it’s [about] letting the dust settle.

“We’ve questioned things we’ve done. You do that if you’re winning too. It’s seeing what happens over the next few days, chatting with the powers that be ([he Welsh Rugby Union] and family too.”

South Africa scored seven tries to Wales’s two on Saturday but were more dominant than the scoreline suggested. Their errors, and some brave Welsh defence, kept down the score.

“I’m not content with the result but I can’t question how hard the players tried,” he said.

“They [South Africa] are world champions. You know how powerful they are. Going away from this campaign, some of the players are aware there’s some conditioning work [to be done]. Not everyone.

“What they learned tonight is little things that quality sides take advantage of. We got caught a couple of times. Hopefully they’ll be better for that. I thought the effort and what the players put in, people should be proud of that.”

Gatland said patience was required as he rebuilds the squad following the loss of several key players after last year’s Rugby World Cup in France.

“That’s been a real challenge for us. It takes time and it’s hard to replace overnight.”

A fourth person has died as Storm Bert continues to batter the UK with 70mph winds and flooding in Wales. 

North Wales police have recovered the body of a man following the disappearance of 75-year-old Brian Perry. 

The pensioner had gone missing while walking with his wife and dog next to the River Conwy. 

On Saturday, three drivers were killed in Winchester, west Yorkshire and Northamptonshire as the storm continued to tear through the country. 

A major incident has been declared in South Wales after dozens of homes, businesses and a number of schools were flooded.

Flights have been cancelled and trees have fallen on railway lines causing lengthy delays for commuters. 

Around 350,000 homes have lost power so far as gusts tore down power lines, though most have been reconnected.

Kim Leadbeater told Sky’s Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips that she has “huge respect” for Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood, but that she doesn’t agree with her opinion.

In a strongly worded intervention ahead of Friday’s House of Commons vote, Ms Mahmood said the state should “never offer death as a service”.

She said she was “profoundly concerned” by the legislation, not just for religious reasons, which she has previously expressed, but because it could create a “slippery slope towards death on demand”.

Asked about the criticism, Ms Leadbeater said: “I have got a huge amount of respect for Shabana. She’s a very good colleague and a good friend.

“In terms of the concept of a slippery slope, the title of the bill is very, very clear.

“It is called the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill. It cannot include anybody other than people who are terminally ill, with a number of months of their life left to live. It very clearly states that the bill will not cover anybody else other than people in that category.”

Ms Leadbeater’s bill proposes legalising assisted dying for people with six months left to live, on the approval of two doctors and a High Court judge.

She wants people who are in immense pain to be given a choice to end their lives, and has included a provision in the legislation to make coercion a criminal offence.

The matter will be debated for the first time in almost 10 years on Friday, with MPs given a free vote, meaning they can side with their conscience and not party lines.

As a result, the government is meant to remain neutral, so the intervention of cabinet ministers has provoked some criticism from within party ranks.

Labour peer Charlie Falconer told Sky News Ms Mahmood’s remarks were “completely wrong” and suggested she was seeking to impose her religious beliefs on other people.

Asked about his comments, Ms Leadbeater said it was important to remain “respectful and compassionate throughout the debate” and “for the main part, that has been the case”.

She added: “The point about religion does come into this debate, we have to be honest about that. There are people who would never support a change in the law because of their religious beliefs.”

Ms Leadbeater went on to say she had “no doubts whatsoever” about the bill, which has also been objected by the likes of Health Secretary Wes Streeting and former Labour prime minister Gordon Brown.

Asked if she has ever worried about people who don’t want to die taking their own lives because of the legislation, Ms Leadbeater said: “No, I don’t have any doubts whatsoever. I wouldn’t have put the bill forward if I did.

“The safeguards in this bill will be the most robust in the world, and the layers and layers of safeguarding within the bill will make coercion a criminal offence.”

A man is fighting for his life after a stabbing on Westminster Bridge, police have said.

Officers were called to the scene at around 10.45am to reports of a fight and found a man with a stab injury. He was taken to hospital in critical condition.

Three people have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and another has been arrested on suspicion of affray.

Two of those arrested were taken to hospital with minor facial injuries, the Met Police said.

It is understood the incident is not being treated as terror-related.

The road remains closed as police investigate.

Russia launched a large drone attack on Kyiv overnight, with Volodymyr Zelenskyy warning the attack shows his capital needs better air defences.

Ukraine’s air defence units shot down 50 of 73 Russian drones launched, with no immediate reports of damage or injuries as a result of the attacks.

Russia has used more than 800 guided aerial bombs and around 460 attack drones in the past week.

Warning that Ukraine needs to improve its air defences, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said: “An air alert has been sounded almost daily across Ukraine this week”.

“Ukraine is not a testing ground for weapons. Ukraine is a sovereign and independent state.

“But Russia still continues its efforts to kill our people, spread fear and panic, and weaken us.”

Russia did not comment on the attack.

It comes as Russian media reported that Colonel General Gennady Anashkin, the commander of the country’s southern military district, had been removed from his role over allegedly providing misleading reports about his troops’ progress.

While Russian forces have advanced at the fastest rate in Ukraine since the start of the invasion, forces have been much slower around Siversk and the eastern region of Donetsk.

Russian war bloggers have long complained that units there are poorly supported and thrown into deadly battles for little tactical gain.

With a record number of young people currently unemployed, Labour promised in its manifesto a “youth guarantee” for 18-21 year olds to have access to training, an apprenticeship, or support to find work.

“If people repeatedly refuse to take up the training work responsibilities, there will be sanctions on their benefits,” Ms Kendall said.

“The reason why we believe this so strongly is that we believe in our responsibility to provide those new opportunities which is what we will do. We will transform those opportunities, but young people will be required to take them up.”

The Labour government has said it will stick to a commitment under the former Tory administration to reduce the welfare bill by £3bn over five years.

Ms Kendall said her party will bring in its “own reforms” to achieve that target, though did not elaborate further.

The Conservatives had planned to change work capability rules to tighten eligibility, so around 400,000 more people signed off sick long-term would be assessed as needing to prepare for work by 2028/29 to deliver the savings.

Asked whether these people would ultimately be denied their current benefits under Labour’s plans, Ms Kendall told the BBC’s Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg: “I’m saying we will bring forward our own reforms. You wouldn’t expect me to announce this on your programme.

“But my objective is that disabled people should have the same chances and rights to work as everybody else.”

The latest official forecasts published by the government show the number of people claiming incapacity benefits is expected to climb from around 2.5 million in 2019 to 4.2 million in 2029.

Last year there were just over three million claimants.

Ms Kendall will launch proposals on Tuesday designed to “get Britain working” amid concerns about the soaring unemployment rate.

The white paper is expected to include the placement of work coaches in mental health clinics and a “youth guarantee” aimed at ensuring those aged 18-21 are working or studying.

Ministers are also looking at a subsidised jobs scheme, Sky News revealed last week.

The UK remains the only G7 country that has higher levels of economic inactivity now than before the pandemic.

Ms Kendall said the reasons are “complex” and include the fact that the UK is an older and sicker nation.

Asked whether she believes “normal feelings” are being “over-medicalised”, she said that while some people may be “self-diagnosing” themselves with mental health issues it is a “genuine problem”.

“There’s not one simple thing. You know, the last government said people were too bluesy to work.

“I mean, I don’t know who they were speaking to. There is a genuine problem with mental health in this country.”

Ms Kendall’s language was softer than Sir Keir Starmer, who this weekend promised a crackdown on “criminals” who “game the system” .

Writing in the Mail on Sunday, he said: “Make no mistake, we will get to grips with the bulging benefits bill blighting our society.”

The price of Bitcoin has somewhat cooled off, struggling to reach the highly-coveted $100,000 mark, after an intense bullish run all week long. However, investors appear to be undeterred by the sluggish price action of the premier cryptocurrency in the past few days.

Bitcoin Taker Buy/Sell Ratio Is Rising — Impact On Price

In a November 23 post on the X platform, prominent crypto analyst Ali Martinez shared that traders have taken to loading their bags with Bitcoin in recent days. This on-chain observation is based on the “taker buy/sell ratio,” which tracks the taker buy and taker sell volumes for a specific cryptocurrency.

A greater-than-one value of the taker buy/sell ratio suggests that the taker buy volume is higher than the taker sell volume. This is usually considered a bullish signal, which suggests the willingness of investors to pay a higher price for a particular cryptocurrency (Bitcoin, in this case).

In contrast, when the metric’s value is less than 1, it means that more sellers are willing to sell their assets at a lower price. Typically, this indicates a bearish sentiment amongst investors, as the selling pressure is overshadowing the buying pressure in the specific market.

Martinez highlighted in his post on X that the Bitcoin taker buy/sell ratio across major trading platforms, including Binance, OKX, HTX, and Bybit, has witnessed a significant surge in the past day. As shown in the chart below, the metric spiked to a value of over 28 on Binance, the world’s largest exchange.

Similarly, the Bitcoin taker buy/sell ratio climbed well above the 1 threshold, showing the mounting buying pressure in the open market. This level of intense buying activity could ensure that the premier cryptocurrency continues its rally toward the $100,000 milestone.

As of this writing, the price of BTC stands around $97,800, reflecting a 1.1% decline in the last 24 hours. Nevertheless, the flagship cryptocurrency’s performance on the weekly timeframe is still impressive. According to CoinGecko data, BTC is up by nearly 8% in the past week.

Who Is Buying? 

In another post on the X platform, Martinez revealed that a notable cohort of large investors (also known as whales) have been active in the Bitcoin market in the past few days. This class of whales involved here are those holding between 100 and 1,000 coins.

According to data from Santiment, whales have purchased more than 40,000 BTC (equivalent to around $3.96 billion) in the past four days. Considering their influence on market dynamics, this buying activity from the Bitcoin whales could be bullish for price.
