Another interest rate rise could force Australians to sell their homes

Sky News host Paul Murray has broken down the latest inflation data from December 2023.

“Most people believe that, with the headline figure starting to go down, that automatically means there’s going to be no rises in interest rates,” Mr Murray said.

“This seemed to be the overall thumping message you got from much of the media, and that would be awesome, I hope that there are no further increases in interest rates.

“There’s a reason we can’t have any more interest rate rises … the last one put another million people into a thing called mortgage stress.

“If there was going to be another interest rate rise to try to get us to the two to three per cent band – and we are still not at two to three per cent – that would push another 1.6 million people into a scenario where they may not have enough money to pay off their house, they may have to sell their house.”
