‘This is China’: Australian writer Yang Hengjun given suspended death sentence

The Australian’s Foreign Editor Greg Sheridan says he is “astonished” at how people are surprised by China’s decision to give Australian writer Yang Hengjun a suspended death sentence.

Yang Hengjun was handed a suspended death sentence but could be commuted to life imprisonment after two years if he does not commit any serious crimes in that period.

“This is China … this is the Communist Party of China,” he told Sky News host Andrew Bolt.

“It shows complete and absolute contempt for Australia, this is an Australian citizen who has done nothing worse than criticise the Chinese Community Party and the government.

“He’s a writer and a dissident.”
